Do You Have to Sacrifice Your Happiness to Succeed in Music?

When sacrifice becomes the measure

How do you decide whether you are working hard enough on your music?

Maybe you look at what you have finished or what you are learning. But what happens when you start measuring commitment by what you are willing to give up?

Rest can begin to feel like something you have to justify. Another project can feel like an opportunity you cannot afford to turn down. Enjoying yourself might even make you wonder whether you are taking the work seriously enough.

Those thoughts can grow out of a familiar rule: success has to be earned through sacrifice.

Work, art, and good times

On October 22, guitarist and songwriter Guilherme A. de Souza joins me on Do Music Differently to question that rule.

Guilherme is the founder of Spiritual Devastation, writes heavy and thrash metal songs, and teaches guitar in South Brazil. He learned the rule that success requires sacrifice from other musicians and music professionals in his hometown music scene.

Our conversation will explore how that belief shaped his identity and choices, including overspending and taking on too many projects. What did the rule mean to him? How did it influence his decisions? And what helped him begin questioning it through his journey?

Today, Guilherme sees music as work, sweat, and tears, but also art and good times. Changing the rule helped him enjoy the process more.

His turning point came when he started using the Flow of Music Prosperity to stay connected to why music is his passion, how to keep going when it is hard, and a support system during those times. I want to hear what that looks like in the everyday choices of a musician.

Can joy be part of getting there?

Music takes work, sweat, and sometimes tears. But laughter, connection, and good times belong in that story too. You don’t have to sacrifice your happiness to prove you’ve earned your success. Joy can be part of how you get there. Joy takes effort: identify what brings it, make time for it, and protect that time.

We will explore how using the Flow of Music Prosperity helped Guilherme reconnect with his passion and approach difficult times with support. Joy needs attention and effort too. We have to learn what brings it, choose time for it, and protect that time when other demands arrive.

What part of music brings you joy? Choose something specific, make time for it this week, and consider what you will need to do to protect that time.
